187. Motor Cop Survives a Crash | Physical Recovery but Career Ending | Psychedelics Therapy

Rob Poynter

In the world of law enforcement, the badge becomes a part of you, a symbol of duty and courage that defines your life. But what happens when the badge has to be set aside before you're ready? For Rob Poynter, a former Alameda County Deputy Sheriff, an unforeseen motorcycle crash changed everything, forcing him on a journey through recovery and self-discovery.

LISTEN

Rob grew up in Fremont, California, under the shadow of his father's legacy in law enforcement. His dad, a deputy sheriff and homicide detective, left an indelible mark on him, showcasing the camaraderie and adrenaline of the job. Rob was always drawn to these aspects, yet keenly aware of the shadows his father's high-functioning alcoholism cast over their family life. While initially diverging into the world of health and fitness, law enforcement remained a calling he couldn't ignore.

In 2006, after years in the fitness industry, Rob followed his heart into the ranks of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. His path was set—the structured chaos of being a deputy molded his life through varied assignments from the jail to the esteemed position of a motor officer. But even the most controlled environments can't prevent the unpredictable from happening.

Rob’s law enforcement career was cut short in the blink of an eye. A seemingly typical ride turned catastrophic as his police motorcycle slid out from under him, launching him into a life-altering crash. The impact, both physical and emotional, was profound. With extensive injuries to his shoulder and hand, the prospect of returning to duty became increasingly dim. The road to recovery was not just one of physical healing but also a quest for introspection and emotional repair.

Forced into medical retirement, Rob moved into a new phase of life at his cabin, away from the daily grind and camaraderie that had been his world. This shift allowed him the space to reflect on his life choices and confront the personal demons born out of childhood trauma and career pressures. Rob had faced high levels of anxiety, a masked dependency on alcohol, and an undercurrent of rage that often seeped into his family life.

During this period, seeking deeper healing, Rob opened his mind to alternative therapies. Inspired by stories of veterans finding peace through plant-based therapies, he sought out the Siren Project, an organization dedicated to guiding first responders through psychedelic therapy for trauma and PTSD.

Despite initial skepticism, Rob embarked on a transformative retreat in Mexico that would reshape his mind and soul. Through a carefully guided psilocybin and toad ceremony, Rob faced his fears head-on. In an intense, restorative journey, he revisited past traumas, confronted unresolved issues with his parents, and found peace with the guilt he carried over familial and career-related obligations.

These sessions weren't just about revisiting the past; they were about healing and finally letting go of long-held grief and anxiety. Rob’s experience proved eye-opening, providing an emotional reset, and instilling a newfound vision for his future beyond the badge.

Today, Rob Poynter stands as a testament to resilience and the power of redefining one's identity beyond a career. He has not only embraced his new life with enthusiasm but has also become an advocate for alternative healing methods among his peers, emphasizing the importance of mental wellness in high-stakes professions such as law enforcement and military service.

His journey is a call to action for other first responders and veterans to open up about mental health, seek help when needed, and explore unconventional paths for healing. Rob’s story echoes the importance of vulnerability and transparency in overcoming the hidden wounds that too often accompany those who serve on the front lines.

Rob continues to impact lives, channeling his experiences into volunteering and creating financial security for his family through private money lending. His story is a compelling narrative of courage, not just in facing the visible challenges of law enforcement, but also in navigating the personal battles that lie beneath.

In sharing his story, Rob extends a hand to fellow military veterans and first responders—encouraging them to pursue healing on their terms and create a legacy of growth, empathy, and resilience. Rob’s journey reminds us that healing is possible, and often, the first step lies in daring to explore within ourselves.
